Supermarkets & Shopping around Benahavis
Although shopping is unlikely to be high on your priority list I would like to highlight where the main supermarkets are. You should also sample the market in the main street of the village on a Tuesday if you want some fresh fruit and veg or the Sunday market (non food) about 2 Km down the hill on the left near the church. There are also some seasonal evening markets in the main street too especially during the summer period.
Carrefour (Local) – towards the end of the main street there is a small Carrefour Mini Supermarket that sells a good variety of things including nice fresh baguettes.
Local Shop (Benahavis) – If you come out of the apartment through the side gate and turn right and walk to the top of the steep hill and then turn right onto the main street, there is grocery store on the right hand side about 50M from the top of the hill. It sells fresh bread and an assortment of other things but it’s limited in variety.
Supermarkets – The nearest supermarket is Mercadona which is 4-5Km down the hill but usually closed on a Sunday. If you take the road out of Benahavis (there’s only one) and past the 1st roundabout in the village follow straight down the hill for about 4-5Km under the large Toll Motorway and you will come to a 2nd roundabout and there is a Mercadona Supermarket on the right hand side on the hillside which has a fairly good selection of food and great fresh and cheap king prawns which I highly recommend.
If you prefer Lidl it’s about 10 Km in total from Benahavis. Carry on down the hill until you get to the A7/N340 (dual carriageway) and turn right towards Estepona (on the A7) and then go along about 3Km and you should see a small sign for Lidl (just after the boat showroom) which is just after another Mercadona (larger) supermarket on the right hand side. You’re best coming off at that Mercadona and then following a short way (around 100m) along the same direction parallel to the motorway and then turn right into Lidl. If you miss this small road come off at the main junction (Cancelada) and then turn right and right again to come back on yourself then turn left into the store. They have lovely fresh bread and a good selection of food and wine at low prices. For other Lidl stores click here.
Sundays – A lot of the larger supermarkets are closed on a Sunday so make sure you do that essential shop on Saturday if you need to. The Carrefour in the village or the SuperSol in the Repsol Garage at the bottom of the hill just before the motorway (7Km) is open on Sundays and has a reasonable range of products. Some Lidl stores might be open in the peak summer period on Sundays so click here to see!
Other Shops – There is also a fruit and vegetable shop and good butchers off the main street (turn right half way down the main street by the church and they are both on the right) and free parking.
There are lots of nice independent shops selling clothes, souvenirs, artwork and many other nice things in the Benahavis village streets.
Shopping Centres – If you do want to go shopping for clothes or other things there is El Corte Inlges in Puerta Banus (15 mins by car) or a large shopping centre (La Canada, 20 mins drive towards Malaga past Marbella at the Ojen junction) which has a large variety of shops.
Post Office – The Post Office (Los Correos) is located in Avenida de Andalucia towards the end of the main street on the left hand side, with a yellow post box outside. Directions – If you come up the main street up the big hill you will come into the village centre and there is a Santander Bank on the left then the Post Office is located a few doors down from there just before the church.
Banks – There are a few banks with cash points in the village and some of the bars only take cash so it’s best to have some cash!
